# Forgetting: Context Amnesia (A-302.4)

> Re-reads files and re-asks questions it already has answers to.

a.k.a. "groundhog read" · research mapping: FM-1.4 Loss of conversation history

## How to spot it

1. The same file or resource is read three or more times without having been modified in between.
2. The agent asks the user a question it has already asked, or one the user has already answered.

## What it sounds like

> Let me take a look at config.ts to understand the structure.
>
> Let me look at config.ts to understand the structure.
>
> First, let me read config.ts.

## How common it is

Common in long sessions. Strongly correlated with context compaction.

## What it isn't

Re-reading after an edit is verification, not amnesia.

## The fix

Keep a running scratchpad of established facts (file layout, decisions, user answers) and consult it before reading or asking.

Step 8, Memory: I wrote down what I'd already learned, and I read my notes before reading the file a fifth time.

The sponsor's note an agent receives:

> You have read `{detail}` {count} times without it changing. Write down what you learned from it in three bullet points and work from those notes instead of reading it again.
